Why this scan failed

How to scan well

Pick the right object. Print, texture and matte surfaces scan well. Plain white, glossy, black or transparent things give the solver nothing to grip. Add texture (tape strips, marker dots, a label) or use the Kinect for those.

Fill the frame. About 30 cm away, the object taking up most of the screen. Wait for the detail chip to read ok or sharp; it refuses soft photos.

Walk slowly, all the way round. About 30 photos per lap at one height, then two more laps higher up. The ring fills as you go, and the coach line tells you when you skipped too far.

Real millimetres. Put the printed board under the object and type its square size in mm. Done scans then show a mm badge and measure true.

Two minutes after upload the pre-flight verdict appears: how many photos placed and, if it failed, which sides to re-shoot. The full model takes longer. Leave the page, it carries on.
